Application errors out, hence wondering if it is legal to have just the first name and have no last name?

  1. Yes. Take Cher and Madonna for example.


  2. Ordinarily, a judge has legal discretion to grant or deny a name change for frivolous or immoral purposes.  That said, the Minnesota Supreme Court allowed a petitioner to change his name to "1069" but ruled that "Ten Sixty-Nine" might be acceptable.  

    Of course, as a practical matter, I don't know how "1069" or for that matter "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" can cope with computerized forms.

  3. It is indeed legal, for example, a famous music artist named Prince changed his name (legally) to a symbol.  

  4. A little more detail to what your asking......You have to have a first name AND a last name. How many John's, Leo's, Crystal's, are there in the world...a lot. Thats why First names and Last are needing in common society.
