I've heard yes and I've heard no. Please only answer if you know the answer and can cite and link me to a reputable source for your answer. I've tried dozens of web searches and have searched dmv.org as well. I'd prefer a website that cites a specific passage in Colorado state statutes or other official or legal material.

And yes, I already know about the neutral safety switch etc, I already know HOW to do it, I just need to know if it's legal.

  1. Call your Colorado local DMV, police, and  about it.

  2. Many shops will not install them on manual transmissions due to the liability factor (you leave the car in gear, auto-start right through the side of your house, etc).

Never heard of them being illegal!

  3. It is illegal to install a model meant for automatic transmission only in a standard transmission car, because it involves bypassing the neutral safety switch.  This would allow the car to start in gear.  If you already know how to do it just by bypassing the safety switch, you do not know how to do it legally.

There are some models that are made specifically for standard transmission vehicles, and the car will only start if the unit has been armed properly when the vehicle is parked.  Installation is more complex, and there are more parts installed to make it impossible to start it in gear.  It is not illegal to install these anywhere, so far as I know, or the manufacturers' websites would have notices to that effect..
