Question:

Is it legal to post my covers of songs on the internet?

I've recorded some cover songs by popular artists. I have no intention of selling them; I only want to show people what I can do. I want to put them on my blog. Is it legal to post covers of copyrighted material?

If it is, do you know of a website that's good for hosting stuff like that?

  1. No, it isn't.

The copyright belongs to the person who wrote the song. You can't publish his work - online or otherwise - without his permission.

    Richard

  2. .    If you make any money from your blog, even if it is not from the songs,  you owe the song writers some money. I don't know who is going to ever find out but you would owe a fine if you didn't register with the industry first

  3. no, as long as you are not getting money for them plus you yourself have a copyright interest in the songs as you used your own lyrics, just don't profit from it and you'll be ok

  4. It is legal as long as you are willing to pay the royalties.

The other option is to get permission from the copyright holder.

I work for a community TV station and we like to cover local events but must be very careful about what music is used.

There are a considerable number of old classics that fall under public domain which can be used for free.

  5. Do you have the rights to do such a cover song from who owns the song. If so then yes, if not then you could run into a legal problem. What could happen can range to then never finding out, to being order to take down the songs. all the way to paying fines as much as (something like) $250,000 per song + jail time + fines for each time the songs is played, ok this would be worse case. Or anything in between.
