Is it legal to put a child car seat in the back of an extended cab pick up truck when the seats face sideways?

I am currently limited to just a pick up truck for transportation, however I have a 2 yr old and 7 month old. I'm wondering if I can legally put my 2 yr old in the back with the seats face to the side rather than front. I'm thinking it's probably safer to put him back there than my 7 month old (I do not have airbags)

  1. Car seats can NOT be used on seats that face sideways or rear.

  2. the seats are made to sit forward or to the rear so yes if its sits sideways its doing no good thus making  it about as good as no car seat

  3. I don't know about legal but it wouldn't be safe.  Those seats are meant to be facing forwards or backwards but not sideways.  Your children could break their little necks in a head on collision.  Put them up front with you.

  4. That's a great question. .Unless there was a way to secure  the seat the same way as in a car, it is not a good idea. .The first thing you might do is check the owner's manual and see what it says. .I suspect that because of the seating arrangement, your truck is not recommended (safe) for kids in child seats.

    All the best.

  5. No you can not do this.  Carseats can only be used on forward facing vehicle seats.

  6. legal maybe DEADLY yes......

  7. Yes it is illegal to do this because the extended cabs seat is too small and will not support the seat and the child.

This is for the extended cabs with the small side seats but it is legal for them to seat in a extended cab with four doors, those will have full seats.......

  8. Legal - depends upon where you are, most the time, yes. However, lots of things are legal that aren't safe.

If you read the instruction manual for both the truck and the car seat, you'll see that both explicitly say you can not put car seats in jump seats, which is what those side facing seats are called. Its not safe for anyone to sit there. So, unfortunately, that means you can not in any way safely transport yourself and 2 children in this vehicle, as both children still need to be in car seats and there's no way to fit them.
