Is it legal to strike a golf ball with the back of an iron, and if not, what is the penalty?

  3. Yes it is legal, (had to do it one time from behind a tree in a HS tourney) as stated here:  

                                               Sec III; Rule 14-1: The ball must be fairly struck at with the head of the club and must not be pushed, scraped or spooned.

    So as long as the contact was good (i.e. No pushing, spooning or double hitting) then it was a perfectly legal shot.

  4. There are many way to hit a golf ball. If you really must, to safe strokes, why not. No penalty

  5. i think you could stroke the golf ball with the back but it woudent go that far.

    penalty is going the ball into the water and cant find the ball etc
