  1. It's best to check with your local building code. The answer to your question might vary from municipality to municipality. Especially since you're in California where some areas are more subject to wildfires than others.

But a better option (why temp nature) is to use a fiber-cement siding that has the same grade as wood but won't rot, no termites, etc.

  2. I am thinking that it would not work now in Ca since all the fires. I do know that Wood Shake Roofs are no longer legal and the existing ones can only be repaired. Hence, my thinking on the Wood Siding. We currently have Wood Siding and our house was built in 1978. Lost our wood shake roof in very high winds 10 years ago. Couldn't fix the amount of damage by law. So had to put on an entire new roof of 40 year composition tiles. Back then that cost was $28,000.00, and Insurance Covered it.  I would suggest the Composition Wood Siding...Trex or something like it...for it says it lasts forever, won't warp, and never needs upkeep. Best bet for the buck. But you need to check it out at your local lumberyard.
