  1. No, privately-owned stores are not public places.

  2. i'm pretty sure it is because of all the videos on the Internet that feature stores and such. i think the only problem is that if u really badmouth the store in some way.

  3. it is legal but the manager will try to convince you it is not. if you disturb the peace then cops may be called

  4. Public places, yes.  However, Walmart, Target, Grocery stores, etc. are NOT public places.  Basically, you have to be on City sidewalks, beach, etc.

  5. Some people will not take it too kindly if you are taping in store UNLESS you have the store's permission

  6. First of all, understand that stores are actually private property that allow the public to access them.  Therefor you must have permission to take pictures or video on their property.  Depending on your behavior, they usually don't mind.  However, if you are recording anything they consider to be proprietary, they have the right to require you to stop, and they can also require that you delete any images recorded, if using digital, or hand over any film used.

Out on the streets, or in a park IS public property and you can video all you want, as long as you don't interfere with/harass anyone else.
