Is it legal to walk along the side of an A road/dual carriage way in the UK?

  1. Pedestrians must not be on motorways or slip roads, but all other roads walk on the pavement, if there is no pavement keep to the right-hand side of the road so that you can see oncoming traffic.


  2. Yes.  Many of them have pavements and towns and villages alongside them.  You can even ride a bike along them if you want (or dare!).

    Where you are prohibited from doing so, there will be a road sign telling you otherwise. (Circular sign, red border, picture of pedestrian walking between two dotted lines with a red band going daigonally across the picturegram).

    Pedestrians are also prohibited from walking on motorways, even those numbered like A1(M), A48(M), A74(M), etc.

    If there is a pavement, you should use it. If there is no pavement on either side, walk facing the traffic. Wear at least one item of clothing that is either white or light in colour. Avoid an outfit mainly coloured green (think about it!)
