Nah, it's the whole "artistic thing," which is actually pretty cool.

That way, if movies don't cut it they aren't stuck serving Mickey Dees.

I think that rule keeps changing along with the reasons for it. It used to be expected that entertainers were at competent as acting, singing AND dancing. Then for a while, they seem to have specialized. In the late 70's with the revival of the movie musical, and in 1981 with the birth of MTV, singers found themselves in front of the camera, and some of thern were good at it. Can't blame the others for trying. Nowadays, the competition is incredible. The more ways you get yourself seen (even if that means the tabloids) the better.
