Is it likely that Hurricane Gustav will turn into a category 5 hurricane as it passes over..?

...the Gulf of Mexico? Doesn't warm water fuel a hurricane? Facts and stuff please would be very much appreciated.

  1. Hurricanes rarely reach a level 5 and when they do, they do not sustain the winds necessary for them to be categorized as a level 5 for very long. While Gustav may reach level 5, it will most likely be a level 4 or maybe even a 3 by the time it reaches landfall.


  2. yes it is. they did say it might becaome a cateory five for a brief while, maybe even tonight or tommorrow.

    i mean this moreing it had 80mph winds and now 135 in just a few hours.

  3. Yes it is likely. The winds are at 150 mph now and only need to be 155 mph according to the saffir simpson scale to become a Cat 5. The warm waters will fuel the storm. You can check it out on national hurricane centers website. Hope this helps. Should not hit as cat 5 but, will be a 5 over the gulf
