Children of men or women who smoke, even cigarettes and let alone drugs, have a much higher rate of cancer, birth defects, and premature birth.  For a healthy baby, he should quit and get clean avoiding all cigs for a few months until you conceive.

Then if he wants he can start up again, as long as he doesn't expose you to any cigarette smoke or other smoke.

As for  the sperm survival, sperm can survive for up to 5 days but only in fertile quality cervical fluid (living inside the woman after s*x in other words). So if you have s*x and you have egg white cervical fluid present, the sperm can theoretically survive up to 5 days, but more likely they will die within 3 days.  

94 percent of pregnancies happen as the result of s*x  on t he day of the woman's ovluation or up to 2 days prior.

but that said, the sperm can't survive outside of his body like in a condom or something....

Yes sperm can last up to 72 hours. Smoking pot (not sure about Ciggs ) is false. Studies have shown that Marijuana can increase sperm count, but really it's just all in Gods timing. Rent a movie called Super High Me.  A guy smoked pot for 30days non-stop had his sperm count checked before and after and his count was higher after.

If his is really serious about having a baby with you, then he should quit both at least for the time being.   As for sperm, if his sperm are healthy, they can live between 3-5 days in the womb. If you are worried about your chances, if you make love every other day, that should be enough. You don't want to make it a job. It will effect your relationship.

Healthy sperm can survive in the uterus for 1 to 3 days. But smoking, especially marijuana, decreases the chances of healthy sperm. If you are seriously ttc and so is your husband, he needs to lay off the smokes, esp the pot!!
