Question:

Is it mandatory to have EU citizenship to teach English in Spain? (ESL)?

I want to teach English in Spain and all the job listings say EU citizenshup required which makes it nearly impossible to get a job. Spain was my first choice to teach abroad but instead I am now in Korea teaching which isn't bad but it's no Spain. Is there any good sites that have jobs (school, government) to teach in Spain that don't require EU citizenship? I have looked hard but have found none. I am American.

  1. My resources indicate that this is not the case. If you do not have EU citizenship you will need work and residence permits. Might be worth you reading the following for a cleaer understanding:

  2. Look into agencies such as ISS or Search Associates that place American teachers in international schools.  DoD schools and many school connected with embassies have American teachers, although in general, it is much harder to teach in Europe than in Asia as an American.
