  1. It's you.

  2. The US Radio business is in tough times. New media competition (iPods, I'net, satellite) are all sucking ad dollars away from radio (and TV, newspapers, magazines, etc).

All these media are trying to cope with providing the best profits to shareholders, results for advertisers and entertainment to listeners - under trying circumstances.

It's a bit of a challenge. They thought allowing big groups to consolidate and own lots of stations would help (Telecommunications Act of 1996). It's been a disaster with bland repetition, jocks voice-tracked from cities far away, no localism, bad bean-counter management instead of creative talent and lots of commercials to make up the difference.

DAB was thought to become a Savior, but has been handled badly. I could go on, but that gives you the basis for answering your question. Local radio isn't necessarily local anymore and there's lots of copycat formats. Which would be OK, if they were copying good stuff. Unfortunately, they don't always succeed. And all chase the elusive 25-54 year old.

  3. Yes!  I blame corporations for it.  Have you ever noticed how many Clearchannel or Cumulus radio stations there are?

  4. No just major market ones... I find if you are willing to put up with some amateur sounding DJs, the music usually rocks at stations in the sticks.

  5. I only like to listen to WMMR Preston & Steve

  6. nooo

  7. The music stations all suck here in the NY-NJ area.  I now either listen to classical or some religion station once in awhile  or just turn the d**n thing off completely.

  8. I'm in England.

They started to get rubbish as I aged.  :)

I was in the generation of Radio 1 DJ's of  DLT, Simon Bates and Steve Wright. Flippin' good DJ's. Funny too, good music.

Steve Wright actually making me pull off the road I was laughing so much. That was in Gosport.

Can't listen to Radio 1 now. Just appalling.

So if I'm driving up and down the country, it's usually the commercial channels. Better music.

Or I sometimes listen to Radio 2.

  9. I think commercial radio does suck! I havent listened to it in 2 years! sirius satellite radio rocks! well worth the money and the best part no commercials and coast to coast coverage!

  10. Switch to satellite radio, preferably Sirius.
