SAN CLEMENTE – A 27-year-old man is in custody after allegedly trying to smuggle two Mexican children into the United States, the Border Patrol announced Wednesday.

A Border Patrol agent stopped the driver of a Ford Expedition on northbound Interstate 5 near San Clemente about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday after spotting the children trying to hide in the back seat, a Border Patrol spokesman said. When stopped, the driver claimed the children, an 11-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, were his nephew and niece. But when the children gave different information, the driver was arrested, the spokesman said.

Further investigation determined that the children were in the country illegally, and agents suspect the man was being paid to bring them to Los Angeles. They also found a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the SUV, the spokesman said.

  1. I don't know the circumstances and neither do you.  overall though, I do know that if I wasn't in the US and was as close as Mexico, Central America or South America, I would probably be trying to get in.  I find no fault with these people.

  2. The decision to do so is usually arrived at when people are in such desperate poverty and dire circumstances that the only choice they have left to secure any remotely reasonable chance of a different and better life for their children is to enter into the risky and murky world of human smuggling. Morality is pliable and subservient to circumstance, and when circumstances get so bad that you can't see any future for yourself or your children the only moral thing you can do is whatever you can to try to at least create a future and opportunity for your children even if you cannot do so for yourself.

EDIT: I was going to leave it there but I just couldn't resist commenting on the irony of saying that sending your kids away in the hands of a people smuggler should prompt the response of removing those children from their parents' home. Just a suggestion, but, I think it might be a little bit late for that mightn't it?

Also, to the person who cannot understand why people in situations of poverty have children in the first place, I made my statement for poverty in general, and while it would be a generalisation to assume that anyone from Mexico has no future and comes from poverty, it is not untrue to say that Mexico is not prosperous and that there are large sections of the population who are poor. With that in mind, are you suggesting the sterilisation or abstinence of an entire nation? Besides which, Catholicism is culturally very strong in Mexico, they aren't big on birth control. Additionally, in third world countries it is often necessary for survival to have many children for labour, however it is a vicious cycle owing to the increasing demand upon very meagre resources held by the poor in the first place making such steps necessary.

  3. i don't like all the illegal immigration first of all. it's causeing a lot of problems for economy around here. jobs are scarce and all the mexican are grabbing the few up as they pop up. second, if i was going to mexico, i'd probably get weed too. it's cheaper! then again, u can get good deals if u just go to texas or something.

oh, and where the eff are there parents??? that's the real issue i think.

  4. Ummm! you must be clueless if you have to ask that question! of coarse it's not. Next question!

FYI - they found a small amount of drugs inside the SUV, he was not on drugs therefore it's not proven he's a user. Maybe he bought the SUV in the US off of a Citizen dope head that needed money, and his stuff went along for the ride. It's a possibility!

  5. the circumstances it's amazing that people will just turn their kids over to anyone who will smuggle them without knowing anything about them in America this would make them unfit parents and the kids would be removed from the home. This smuggler had drugs with him, he must already smoked a few before the cops got to him since his memory wasn't on the same page as the kids.A lot of these smugglers normally kidnap and hold for ramson those they smuggle and demand lots of $$$  and since kidnapping is a common occurrence in Mexico it comes natural to a smuggler to become greedy

  6. Maybe he purchased them fair and square in Mexico and was going to use them in his prostitution business. You don't want to restrict his right to engage in business! Illegal aliens are here to help the economy! A couple of rounds to the head should solve his problem!

  7. I'm sure their parents didn't know that he had drugs in the car. And coyotes smuggle in men, women and children everyday. Some get caught, some don't. The only thing different about this was that he had marijuana in the SUV. He wasn't on drugs... big deal, how many people are found here with the same thing?

  8. It is very moral and right to want a better life for your children.

The tactics they used may not have been so great, but I can understand the urge, yes.

  9. It really depends on who's family values you're going by. If it's good, law abiding civilized people then of course it's not moral or right but if you go by the values of illegal criminals, it's perfectly fine.
