  1. You can spell it either way, although the "tal" spelling is becoming more common.  The proper pronunciation is always "neandertal," however.

In German, it is pronounced Neandertal, yet it is spelled Neanderthal (th is pronounced like t).  I have read American Anthropologists insist that it is now Neandertal, but I just assume they don't know that this is exactly how it is pronounced in German.  I always pronounce it Neandertal but still spell it with the "th"

  6. Neanderthals were found in the Neander Valley in Germany. Thal, pronounced "tall" means valley in German

  7. Either.  The calssical spelling is the first, but it is pronounced like the second.
