Is it neccessary to use rubberbands when starting to make dreadlocks?

I want to do them but I don't want to use rubberbands in my hair. I saw a youtube video from knottyboy and the girl doing the dreads doesn't use rubber bands. My hair is not as thick as the guy getting the dreads but it does get pretty frizzy and thick when washed properly. Any information will help. Thanks.

holly c**p, put on a tam and forget about it. You'll get dreads. Trust me!

no, i highly advise you to not use rubber bands

it could get stuck in your dread, if you leave it in there too long
