Question:

Is it necessary for me to wear rib pads in football?

I'm going to be a sophomore in high school. I play running back for JV and wide receiver for Varsity. I also play corner back on defense. My shoulder pads are on the small side and go nowhere near my ribs. Do you think it is a good idea for me to wear my rib pads, and how dangerous would it be not to?

  1. ok i say you wear the rib pads and be safe because all it takes is one shot to the ribs and you can injured and be out for the season or part of it...so put them on and get used to them so that when game time comes, they dont bother you and you are safe enough were you can run people over or juke them out and if you do get tackled you have less likly of a chance of breaking a rib and ending your season.

  2. not nessassary... and how do u play JV and varsiuty at the same time? makes no sense

  3. I think you should ask the equipment manager for a larger pair of shoulder pads, this will save you some money. Also, anyone on our team who wears the rib protectors and is not a QB, catches some $hit for it. It is actually not that dangerous not to wear rib pads, as long as you are staying low, you won't be hit in the ribs anyway.

  4. I think you should wear the rib pads because you might get a shot to the ribs , and if you get hit you can end up with a broken rib or ribs . But if you haven't been wearing them you should give a try and see how you like it . If it's comfortable where them if not then don't

  5. I say if you need them u should ned them for running back and maybe wide receiver, but u probably won't take many hits or any at all at Corner back.

  6. Unless there is a school district or football conference rule saying you must wear them I wouldnt.  Really the QB is the only person to need them.  And dont get bigger shoulder pads.  If you are playing WR you wont get lit up that much in High School ball people just dont react that fast at that level.

  7. Its not necessary, but its just an extra per-caution. That's why they don't come standard in equipment issue. But playing receiver I highly recommend you use them, because at the position your ribs are most likely to be exposed.
