  1. Yes, unless you wish to live dangerously. Windows One LiveCare is trouble free, unlike Norton which is a pig. You can download a free trial. If you buy it you can run up to three PCs on it at no additional cost. It works automatically and also prompts you to back up.

  2. one thing about microsoft windows. its an operating system. thats it. nothing more nothing less.

you definitely need a good 3rd party firewall and anti-virus.

do not rely on windows to protect you. it wont.

i download lost of free tools. the only software that is worth buying is good security. i recommend norton or kaspersky.(what ever its called, but i know its good)

  3. Download a virus scanner. But otherwise, yes.

And AVG blows the big one! So does Norton.

  4. you need anti-spyware and anti-virus. Estimated time of survival without these is about 1 week.

  5. If you mean anti spy-ware, antivirus and firewall. No it's not necessary to buy it. You can get it free, have a poke about on download.com.

  6. I would never buy added security. I find that XP with all security updates installed AND a FREE copy of AVG

  7. absolutely....you can never run any pc without any security software....when you say security i assume you mean virus, spyware, and adware protection.

I recommend Norton Internet Security 2008....an all-inclusive suite that will take take of all of it for you.

    1. virus protection

    2. spyware/adware protection

    3. e-mail protection

    4. Instant messaging protection from viruses

    5. a bi-directional firewall....(incoming and outgoing)

    plus more....

  8. off course, otherwise your open to attack by viruses

  9. Yes and no...

You can get security software for free but paid for ones are usually better.

You will need an anti-virus program and a firewall. (Windows XP comes with a firewall but it is not any good)

If you decide to get free software you should consider AVG for viruses and ZoneAlarm as a firewall.

If you buy one you can get an anti-virus program with a firewall.

I suggest ESET Smart Security or one of the Kaspersky products.

Of course, you could download and install Linux (Ubuntu) instead and you wouldn't need to download or buy anything.
