Is it necessary to change cylinder and concave on combines when changing from corn to sorghum?

  1. Hmm, the Madd Texan and Bran88 must be siamese twins.  For milo (grain sorghum), I've always had to speed up the cylinder quite a bit, like 50-60% over that used for corn.   I've also had to close the concave.  Milo has a tendency to be hard to get off the head and the stalks usually still have quite a bit of moisture in them.  

    I'm in northcentral Missouri and I've found that combining milo around 2 weeks after a killing frost works pretty good.  It's dried down some but isn't so dry that the heads have started shattering.  The last thing you want to do is wait for it to dry down and then get a heavy, wet snow.  It'll take the milo down and then you do have a mess.


  2. Best to check your operators manual for your combine. Most of the time you just have to add some inserts, adjust the cylider height and adjust the speed of the cylinder. The manual will tell you how to "ball park" the settings.
