Is it necessary to disinfect your floors? What products can I use?

I worry about the cleanliness of my floors and how sanitary they are since I have a crawling infant. Is hot soapy water and a mop effective in removing bacteria and harmful substances on my bathroom floor and throughout my house? Is there a product meant for disinfecting floors that's safe for humans?

If people walk around all the time in shoes that are worn on the outside, it is important to keep your floors clean. A lot of germs are trailed in on bottoms of shoes. Now, if shoes come off at the door, and socks or slippers are then worn you don't have to wash to floors as often.

I have found that Mr. Clean disinfecting cleaner is good. So is bleach, water, with regular non-ammonia cleaner.

It's true that children do build up immunity when exposed to germs, but I would still make sure a little baby is on as clean a surface as I can get.

hot soapy water is great and so is Simple Green.  you want to use cleaners that leave a residue that is safe if ingested.

I mop my floor with a vinegar and water solution.  To a standard size scrub bucket add one cup of white distilled vinegar.  This cleans, brightens, and disinfects just as well as most chemical products.  Mopping the floors regularly (at least once a week) is more important than pouring on chemicals in keeping things bacterial free.  Besides, a lot of research is showing that kids who are allowed to get dirty are healthier and develop less allergies than children raised in super sterile environments.

I use the Floormate.  I put bleach water and a little dish soap in it.  It's great because you're not swabbing around all that dirty water.  You can vacuum up all the dirt first, then fill the reservoir with a cleaner of your choice.  It has rotating scrubbing brushes.  THEN you can suck up all that dirty water so your floors dry fast.

If you have pets it's the best because it sucks up sooooo much pet hair.  When you just sweep with a broom, you leave a lot of debris.
