I'm about to buy a car and this guy is telling me to pay for the car and take it, hes also giving me a bill of sale. He said i will get the title within 48 hours after sale, because he needs to get it from the dealership(located in another state).

  1. A title has to be sent to the state so that it will be registered to your name.

Thats why you pay a tax, tag and title fee.

The title fee pays for transferring it to your name.

If you paid cash for a brand new car from a dealer you WOULD NOT get the title. The title must be sent to the state to be registered to your name. Again, for you naysayers, thats why you pay a tax, tag and TITLE FEE.

I'm not saying the guy he's buying the car from is not a crook. BUT the title has to be registered to the new owners name.

    Read his additional remarks know-it-alls.

  2. DO NOT BY THIS CAR!!!!!! GIAT RIP OFF!!!  The title must be signed over by the owner shown on the front of the title to the new owner writter in on the back. This along with a bill of sale shows that the car was sold to the new owner. Anyone who cannot produce the title at time of sale is trying to rip you off. the title shows who actually owns the car legally. You may pay for it,but,if the title isn't transfer to you at the time of sale, some one else owns that car. Also!!!! check the title for liens listed. If there is a lien (owed money) on that car and you buy it,now you owe that money. The owner selling must provide whats called a "lien release" along with the title to show that the loans have been paid in full. I'd walk away from this deal, no RUN!

  3. Scam and illegal to drive without.

  4. Get it immediately.  You should be signing it and he should be signing it at the time of the sale as a transfer of title.  Otherwise, you have no proof that it is his to sell at all.

This sounds weird.  I wouldn't do it if I were you.

  5. Do NOT accept this deal. A bill of sale will not protect you . He obviously does not have a clear title. You don't get a title from the dealership. You get it from the bank or other lending institution that holds the lien. This sounds phony. You could wind up losing your money and the car. ADDED---He should sign it and give it to you...not send it to a dealer. Something real wrong here.

  6. The only time it is advisable to wait on a title is if you are dealing directly with a dealership. When dealing with an individual only exchange money for a title, it is much harder to pursue legal action against an individual selling a car than a dealership. Wait until he has the title before paying for and taking delivery of the vehicle.

  7. YES. The guy will take your money and run.

Tell him, when he get's the title, and signs it over to you.

Have an adult friend with you, as a witness, to this transaction.

You will then give him a certified check, from your bank.

He may be selling you a "stolen" car. Sounds like a "scam."

  8. No Way!!!! No title, NO SALE!! Why is the title at a dealership?? The title should be in his name only. Sounds like a scam to me. Whatever you do, don't pay for this car without that title in your hands.

  9. At least get a faxed copy of it!

  10. Yes.

If he wants to, say, park it somewhere else, then he can park it, but as far as ownership, don't buy it without a title.

A bill of sale isn't the same as a title.  A bill of sale can be fake "proof" of ownership.  What if somebody else owns the car?  So he gets the money, somebody else has the title, you have the car...but then the person with the title can come claim the car.

No, you get the title.  No title, no sale.

  11. You are asking for trouble. Don`t pay any money to this guy until the title is in your hands.

  12. that sounds very fishy dealers only have the titles for the cars they have if he has a loan on it the back would have the title not the dealership i would demand  the title on the spot or go with him and get it but i would not hand any money with out the title

  13. I would never buy a car from a private party without a title!

  14. No way!!!

Unless you are buying from a licensed dealership you should get the title to be able to get tags.

  15. in another state? it sounds weired even though its possible''i have been selling cars for 14 years''.u have to be very carefull.i would not do it unless i know the  people very well or if im buying from a reputable dealership.good luck. u can also give him a small deposit to hold the car and pay the rest after u get the title. .good luck
