  1. It depends on your height.  I'm 5'7" so I can pretty much buy off the rack.  It also depends on how good you want to be.  I have no aspirations to be a professional player(more like a fantasy), but if you want to compete in prestigious amateur tournaments, it would be beneficial to get custom fit for your clubs.

  2. It helps it you are tall .  I just bought new irons and tried many brands and they all hit a little different.

Go to a driving range and hit as many different clubs as you can.

I am 6.4 and needed longer clubs.

  3. Look, your going to spend 600+ bucks on a new set of clubs, don't you want to make sure they fit?   BEsides, most good places do the fitting for free, so whats the big difference?

  4. Its not necessary, you can buy a set off the rack and use them..  BUT>>>>Before you buy anything you should go and "Get fitted"  not to the set of clubs, but what will work best for you.  What I mean by this is one of the major stores like Edwin Watts, or Golfsmith will have someone to "fit you", or give your  "specs".  This does cost to get done, usually around 70.  It will tell you:

    1. What shaft to use (all your clubs)

    2. What lie angle and loft you should have.

    3. Length of your clubs

    4. Also will give you some considerations on what new clubs may be benificial to your game.

They call doing this several things, mostly  "getting Fit for clubs."  It does not neccessairly mean to a specific set or make of clubs, but it does mean to give you what you should be looking for in any set of clubs based on your swing speed, height, and swing characteristics.

To learn more visit the "ping" website.  They describe it very good, and have been ahead of all the other manufactuers for year on the subject of fitting.

Get "fit"  It will take the thought that "maybe there are better clubs for me in a differnet length, flex, shaft out there for me,"  thoughts out of your head while your playing.

  5. Do you buy pants that fit?

Why wouldnt you buy clubs that fit?

People are correct, it isnt necessary - but its usually free and it CANNOT hurt your game. Having incorrect fitted clubs will only hinder your chances of improving.

  6. I think  nkf 711 gave you some good information. I would just like to add using a set of ill-fit clubs can make the game less enjoyable and make it difficult to improve your game.

At the very least you should go to a store and hit as many different clubs as you can. a store with a ping fitting station will have many different configurations in the same club. and if you are near a golfsmith their selection will be even greater.

  7. I would consider it "necessary" only if you exceptionally short or tall. For the most part, custom fitting is a little overrated.

  8. No, it's not necessary. It would be advisable if you wanted the clubs to fit you perfectly but most of us don't have a repeatable, perfect swing. I've been fitted twice and the clubs off the rack in the store are of the same specs that I was fitted for. If you are of abnormal stature, very short or very tall, the club length and lie would be of concern. I'm 5'9" and use standard length and lie clubs.

  9. Do you get fitted for every pair of pants? No! Once you know your size you buy them off the rack.

  10. No
