Is it necessary to read the other books of Princess Diaries?

I am referring to the 4 other books of princess diaries which are:

The Princess Diaries, Volume IV and 1/2: Project Princess

The Princess Diaries, Volume VI and 1/2: The Princess Present

The Princess Diaries, Volume VII and 1/2: Sweet Sixteen Princess

The Princess Diaries, Volume VII and 3/4: Valentine Princess

those seem like extras to me.

then again, you don't really *have* to read each book in the series..

Sometimes Mia refers to things that happened in those books, but they don't contain any major plot points. Mostly they're just fun short stories to pass the time between books.
