Question:

Is it necessary to remove posted messages from the group archives?

A moderator of my local Freecycle Network group just posted a message asking all group members to search the group's archives for all messages they have posted and then to remove all "Offer" and "Wanted" messages they have ever posted to the group. What is the reason for or advantage of "cleaning up" the archives in this manner? Doesn't Yahoo routinely remove the oldest messages in each Group in order to provide additional archive space for newer messages?

  1. yahoo does not remove older post from the archives, they remain they until the member who posted it or the owner/ moderator removes them. as far as I know, archives have unlimited space.

it would probably be best with this type group if the author removes their own post than the owner doing it.

  2. It's not necessary, unless the moderator makes it required to be a member.

The problem they are probably trying to solve is that you can't tell which items have been taken and which are still available.

This is one of many problems with using Yahoo Groups for local recycling and which led us to build http://free.LocalDataPlace.com
