Question:

Is it necessary to tip in this situation?

I frequently go into a local Mexican food restaurant and order up a family size bag of chips and a family size order of hot sauce to take home. They keep a large fridge in an area behind the cashiers that holds a supply of the hot sauce and bags of chips next to it. The other day I picked it up, paid with debit and when I put '0' on the tip part of the receipt that I had to sign, the guy loooked at me funny. Should I tip them for turning around and grabbing some salsa and chips from behind them?

  1. no tip

  2. Sometimes I feel the same way you do.  If I'm signing the receipt and there is a tip line I usually put in $2.00 or if there is tip jar you can just put in a $1.00.  I think in this case where the worker just has to turn around and probably doesn't even bag your purchase you could get away with not tipping.  Maybe alternate.  Sometimes you tip, sometimes you don't.

  3. My tendency is to over, rather than under tip, but in this instance I see absolutely no need to do so.

  4. No more than you would tip the person at the drive-in window at Taco Bell.
