Question:

Is it normal for Vet Offices to refuse to give you a copy of your pets records?

I am moving and have a mare which is under the care of our current vet for anemia. I wanted a copy of her records for our new vet and if we have issues while on the road. The Vet Office refused to give my a copy of the record and said the will only release it to another vet clinic...

I thought it was more like medical records and I have always been able to get copies of my records so why not my horse's? They said it was Dr. Q's records and he has the say? Is this common and correct that they can withhold this info?

  1. I would talk to the vet instead of the tech or office people.  Explain the situation and I'm sure the vet will release them to you.  That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard.  I'm always asking my vet for copies for various things and they never turn me down.  Good Luck!

  2. Since they won't release the official records to you personally, ask if you can get photo copies of everything.

  3. No, they should give you a copy.

  4. Apparently they can, since they did, but it's the most unusual thing I have ever heard of. What are they afraid of? Is it possible for you to talk to Dr Q and demand an explanation? I certainly would.

  5. I can kind of understand not giving you the official documents...but not even a copy?  That's odd.

  6. Im not sure. When i ask for records on my horses i have always been able to get them. My vet makes my go online & retreve with all of their info. I think its sort of dumb, but at least he lets me access it. I would say try your offices website if there is one & go from there. All i have to do is fill out recent info. Click away!

    Good luck.

  7. It shouldn't be. You should be allowed to get copies when needed. Ask the vet. If not, they are suppose to transfer all the papers from your mare's medical record to the other vet.
