Is it normal for a 2 day old guinea pig mom to run away while nursing her 3 babies?

My guinea pig had three babies yesterday and now she'll let them nurse for like 10 minutes at a time, then she jumps up and runs away! They chase after her and then sometimes she gets really tired and lies down to nurse them. We don't handle them too much and she watches over us when we stroke their little backs.

Just wondering... Is this normal?

  1. yeah its normal. she wants to be alone while nursing. and be CAREFUL dont pick her up while nursing. and she might not want you to touch her new babies..........Good luck

  2. yes they do this because in the wild they are on the move. Baby guinea pigs have to fight for only 2 teats. IF they were allowed they would nurse all day and she would get not food, no exercise, and no rest. So she has too. As long as they are healthy and robust you dont have to worry. She feeds them all day and night in intervals. They will also eat anything shes eating too so there isnt much to worry about. Just keep an eye on them. and PLEASE START HANDLING THEM. they are not hamsters they dont reject babies that are handled to much. This is the time you need to handle them so they get more used to humans.

I raised, bred, and showed guinea pigs for 17+ years

  3. Yes it very normal for the mother to do that because by the mother doing that it is showing that the baby's should know when she has had enough and when they should stop so hope this helped till next time I'm Justine H saying GOOD BYE!

  4. She doesn't need to nurse all the time- she'll get up once she wants, and nurse later. It's nothing to worry about.

  5. yes very

they simply run away because if u haven't noticed guinea pigs have extremely long teeth and the mother doesn't enjoy it that much
