For the past week my 2 month old has had a dry cough. Last night she woke up with a temp of 100.4, a stuffy nose and a more deeper cough. I called the pediatrician and was told to give her tylenol and it went down. She saw the doctor today and she didnt seemed concerned at all. But I thought that babies were suppose to have mothers immunity untill they are at least 6 months old. Her fever has gone down but still have a stuffy nose and a cough, also, she doesnt want to eat much. Is it normal for a young baby to get sick? Or is it something more serious? Im not getting much information from my pediatricians office, which by the way, Im switching soon. Thanks for any input!

  1. When my son was 8 weeks old he had a little cough.  I remember that whole day he just didn't seem like himself and he slept more than usual, and I was worried sick that he had RSV or something terrible.  I just sat and held him and cried.  I called his pediatricians office, and the nurse that called me back told me that it is normal for young babies to get colds, but since I seemed very upset she advised me to take him to the pediatric emergency room in my city so that I would feel better.  They did a chest x-ray and all kinds of tests, and it ended up just being a cold.  I just remember so clearly how scary that night was, so I know how you must be feeling.  But, after all of my rambling to answer your question, yes, it is normal.  :-)  Also, her temp isn't extremely high for a newborn.  I hope that makes you feel a little bit better!

  2. My daughter, now 12 months and healthy, had her first real cold when she was 12 weeks old. She had recently started daycare and caught it there. She ran a fever of 101 and stopped feeding as much. Our pediatrician didn't fool around with it. She was sent right to the hospital to have an IV and an overnight stay because she wasn't drinking enough. She recouperated within a few days but it was hard seeing her sick!

Baby's CAN get sick before 6 months, breast milk or not! Trust your instincts. If she seems herself and is eating, chances are she's ok. If she's not acting herself and not eating well, pester the doctor or see someone else!

  3. My daughter had the same type of thing when she was about 3 months old.  She had a slight fever so I also was told to give her tylenol, use a cold mist humidifier, some baby vaporub (not sure the age limit on this) and saline and the bulb syringe.  I repeated the vaporub a few times per day on her back and chest and repeated the saline and syringe before she ate and slept.  This all seemed to help a lot and we left her cold mist humidifier on only while she was sleeping and shut the door.  Another thing the Dr. suggested that seemed to work was to elevate her crib mattress a little on one side by putting blankets or a boppy under the mattress and lay her head on that end.

I hope this helps.  It took my daughter about a week to get over it, I hope your baby feels better.

Oh and you said that your daughter wasn't eating much.  My pediatrician told me to try giving her pediatlyte when she wouldn't eat so that she will stay hydrated.  My daughter did not like it very much but it is worth a shot.

  4. It is not unusual. I nurse, and my daughter had a cold at this age (which seems to linger forever) You spend all the time with baby, and I am sure you know if she has a cold or not. I just let nature take over, and let the cold go away on its own, and it did.

  5. good idea on the switch! when babies r born they breathe thru their little noses so when it gets stopped up they cant breathe to eat. the 6 month thing only if shes being nursed from what i've been told. our dr told us 100.1 rectally go to the hospital. some warm saline solution in her nose then sucked out with an asperator may help with the stuffiness. good luck and congrats!!!

  6. I nursed my daughter and thought the same thing. She did get a cold however, but while nursing her it went by really fast. All her other cousins were sick at the time and that is how she got it. my daughter was around the 2 month old stage too..

hope your baby feels better. I got my daughter a cool air humidifier and put it in her room so she can breathe better at night and I also took her in the bouncer and put her in the bathroom while i took a hot shower during the day to clear up any mucus she may have

It is very normal don't stress about it, your baby can feel all your emotions. and may get upset or stressed out too!

  7. It's common for babies to get colds. Continue to give Tylenol for fever. Use a bulb syringe and nasal saline if she's got some snot. She's probably not eating as much because her nose is stuffy. You should use a warm mist humidifier. Colds are caused by so many different viruses so it's still possible to get one with mother's immunity if breastfeeding.

  8. It's definitely normal if you are not breastfeeding. At three months, my son was sick with what I thought was a cold, until two weeks later, the cough was worse, you could hear congestion in his chest, and the mucous coming from his nose got thicker and thicker, his nose was stuffier, and the hacking got worse.  So to be honest, everyone does not know if their child has a cold. It ended up being bronchitis.  If your babies nose runs and it is clear, it is more likely to be allergies.  If it is yellow or green, there could be something more going on.  Nothing to panic about.  Just see a ped who makes you feel comfortable when addressing your complaints.  My long story short, he was treated with albuterol (which is usually used for asthma) and pulmacort through a nebulizer, which eventually cleared it all up.  Most kids that I know have a nebulilzer and use it when they get cold symptoms.  Works everytime with my son.  Since they say it is not good for babies to have cold medicine, I would suggest a humidifier, they have a liquid vapor you can add, baby vicks, and infant ibuprofen worked better than tylenol for my babies 104 fever.  Atleast til you get to a new doc!

  9. Babies only get their mothers immunities if they're breastfeeding.  So, if you're formula feeding, then yea, it's normal for you baby to get sick.

  10. The common cold can happen at any age including newborns.  That is why they tell you not to take your baby out in crowded places or around 6 people for the first 6 weeks because they can get sick if exposed.
