Question:

Is it normal for a car dealer to offer to take the used vehicle to your mechanic for you for an inspection?

I am looking at purchasing a used vehicle, however I want to get it inspected before I purchase it. I asked the dealer if I could take the car to my mechanic one morning this week for an inspection and his reply was that I just needed to tell him what time and where, and he would bring the car for me.

Is this normal practice of a dealership?

  1. Normal? No.

It sounds like he's going out of his way to earn your business. Very nice of him to do that for you.

  2. No that's not normal, but there is nothing wrong with it either.  Back when i was selling Dodge i took a  car to the their mechanic for them.  Just once though.

  3. we will usually do that if someone asks. We dont really wanna give you the car and have you take it, but we can meet you at your mechanic with the car. Its not really a big deal.

  4. He is obviously trying very hard to sell this car and he believes in what he has enough to have an independent mechanic confirm what he thinks he already knows. Typically the vehicle has already gone through a safety inspection and he has a good idea what is or is not wrong with the vehicle. If your mechanic finds something new, it could change the picture. The other side, your paying for the second inspection he's not. A vehicle history report from the Department of Motor Vehicles would also be a good way of finding out about this car. Salvaged or been in an accident. Good Luck

  5. Probably not normal, but, how long would it take someone to switch major components or disappear with the dealers car if he just handed over the keys for a few hours !!!
