Question:

Is it normal for a ceiling fan's main rod to swing when touched?

It looks like it is old, there seems to be a few empty holes at the smaller base (the larger one, attached to ceiling, is intact) and I wonder if it needs repair, if it won't drop off. Does anyone know how much weight, and for how long can a ceiling fan hold? Just doing a science experiment, the weight is 123 lbs.

  1. Are you sure it weights 123 lbs? Thats alot!

Many fans have been made for years with a ball-in-socket type mount.  Casablanca (I believe) were the first.

It is normal for them to easily sway when pushed.

The holes near the bottom mount are for wires.

If it really is 123 pounds, have it looked at by an electrician if you have any doubts to how long it'll hang in there.

  2. Well, it needs to move a little, but I don't think that it should "swing when touched".

If installed properly, it should hang indefinitely.
