My Dachshund's temperature was 98.9 degrees last night at around 9:30. Around 2 or 3 this morning she was panting and all the signs of labor. However, it's 4:30 pm and she hasn't done much pushing and she'll take naps quite frequently. Is that normal?

  1. its probably cause shes tired from carrying life. However it could be another problem. But its definitely normal for her to sleep

  2. THE FIRST STAGE OF LABOR

During this stage, uterine contractions begin. The ***** will appear very restless and may pace, dig, shiver, pant, or even vomit.  This is all normal and all an owner can do is see that the ***** has water available should she want it. This stage of labor is very long, lasting 6-12 hours and culminates with full dilation of the cervix in preparation to expel a puppy.

THE SECOND AND THIRD STAGES OF LABOR

The second stage is the "hard labor" stage in which the puppy is expelled. The third stage refers to the expulsion of the placenta and afterbirth.  Each pup may not be followed by afterbirth; the mother may pass two pups and then two placentas. This is normal.

Puppies are born covered in membranes which must be cleaned away or the pup will suffocate. The mother will bite and l**k the membranes away.  Allow her a minute or two after birth to do this; if she does not do it, then you must clean the pup for her.  Simply remove the slippery covering and rub the puppy with a clean towel. The umbilical cord may be tied in a knot about one inch from the pup and cut with scissors on the far side of the knot.

Expect one pup every 45-60 minutes with 10-30 minutes of hard straining. It is normal for b*****s to "take a rest" partway through delivery and she may not strain at all for up to four hours between pups.  If she is seen straining hard for over one hour or if she takes longer than a four hour break, a veterinarian should be consulted.

  3. I had a cat that was in labor for three days. the first day no kittys, but after they kept coming. Day one, she cleaned and slept frequently. I wouldn't worry about her unless you see one coming backwards, pushing and nothing happening for more than 15 or 20 minutes, starts running a very high fever, or becomes non responsive. Right now you sound ok.

  4. Sounds all ok.If she is comfortable and sleeping it means she isn't in pain and  is resting up..I would expect her to start  delivering sometime tonight.Keep an eye on her.If she has active labor for more then several hours and does not produce a pup you need to see the vet.

  5. yes, just like us we want to rest up. now if she doesn't start to do anything after tomorrow, i would bring her to the vet. little dogs are notorious for needing c-sections.

  6. She is probably having a puppy stuck, go to the vet right away.

  7. Unless she is in distress, you probably have no reason to worry to much. Active straining, with no outcome, can cause serious problems. Contact your vet and let them know what is up.

  8. If she was having contractions at 2 in the morning and is now resting, I'd have had her at the vet hours ago to make sure she doesn't have a puppy stuck, or have uterine inertia, or dead puppies inside her.

  9. yeah she's just tired!

  10. hmmm im not vet or anything... but some dogs take naps every once in a while...

  11. Yes because from having to carry around her litter in her belly can get tiring and she still needs to rest. The time will come when she pushes them out =]
