Question:

Is it normal for a kitten to have constipation after a tail amputation...or should I worry?

My kitten just had his tail amputated yesterday after an attack [the vet said either a coyote or a racoon]. Overnight, he had diariah, but today he seems to be constipated. He has tried to p**p, but no success. My question is: is this normal? I mean this is only the day after the surgery. He has eaten a little bit and drank some water [probably not as much as he should be]. After the amputation, the vet gave him a penicillin shot and some antibiotics for me to give him twice daily.

  1. Sound normal, whenever my kittens are on antibiotics they either have diarrhea or are constipated. Good Luck

  2. VET

  3. More than likely it is either a side effect of medicine or anestheia given at time at vets. If he doesnt deficate within a whole day call your vet to see him immediatly.

  4. The combination of medicines might be causing the constipation.  I would suggest to increase his intake of wet food if possible.
