Question:

Is it normal for a rabbit's back paw to have a nail that sticks out the side?

My rabbit's back paws each have a nail that sticks out the side - it kinda looks slightly twisted. Is that right? I have two rabbits (they are sisters) and they both have the twisted claw (sounds kinda evil I know!). They are both lionheads. Am I supposed to cut this claw when trimming their nails?

  1. its probably a dew claw, kind of like a thumb i guess. you can clip it, its a regular nail, don't worry just be careful when clipping it, and all the other nails, they bleed if you cut too much. i just trim the tips

  2. No, it sounds like something is wrong with their claws, I would trim those claws just like you trim the others, just be extra extra extra care full not to cut the blood vessel, this will really hurt, especially if it looks twisted.

However if you are to have the misfortune of clipping a vessel apply a damp cotton ball to the claw, and put pressure, until bleeding stops.

  3. it could be a dew claw.  You can trim them yourself but be careful not to cut to close to the paw as you can cut a blood vessel.  If unsure your best bet is to put your rabbit to the vets
