Question:

Is it normal for dogs to be lumpy?

I have a 10 year old Rottie and I've had her for a year. She is generally healthy other then a bit of arthritis. Well, ever since I've had her she's had a few lumps all over her. They all feel differently, one is hard, while another feels fatty, and another feels in-between.

They range from the size of a pea, to the size of a small prune. They don't seem to bother her, and she's been to a vet- no ones ever mentioned them.

Should I get her checked out especially for the lumps? Or are they normal?

  1. Lots of dogs get lumps when they're older. Most are harmless but it's good to get them checked out at the vet, no big rush unless one changes quickly in size or appearance, and check them yourself from time to time to make sure they haven't changed much or that new ones haven't appeared.

  2. Is she overweight? Because my friends dog has the same thing, we call them 'fat lumps' and they don't seem to be a health hazard, but to be sure you should do a bit of research and talk with your vet.

  3. They are probably fatty tumors, which are harmless and common in older dogs, but it's a good idea to have your vet examine them.  They might be more serious.

  4. My Rottie is the same age and has the same kind of lumps. She has been seen by several vets and they all said that unless one of them was in an awkward place that limited his movement, then not to worry about them. I do worry, though.

I am afraid that my boy may be more prone to getting a cancerous tumor if he has all these other ones. I don't like to think about it but Rotties don't live a super long time like smaller dogs can. My dog also has an underactive thyroid for which he takes medicine, but I've been told there is no relation between the two conditions.

  5. my dog has them because he is older, it is non harmless, but if they get too big it could become irritating to the skin.  make a special appt. for the vet to examine the lumps.  strongly suggested.
