Is it normal for kitten to hiss, growl, and hide for a week?

We adopted a 3 &1/2 month old kitten. But all he's done since we brought him home is hide in a corner under furniture. If you go anywhere near the furniture he just sticks his head out and starts growling and hissing! At first I thought 'he's just scared, let's give him a couple days', but it's been nearly a week now and I don't know what to do. We've given him his space, but he's not improving at all. I know it will probably take a while, but can anyone give me ideas on what I shoud be doing? And has anyone else ever had a kitten do this? Thanks.

  1.  Inclose the kitten into a small room (i.e. a bathroom) and let it get used to it's new settings and you. Also try playing and feed the kitten with your hands. Cats are extremely smart and if you teach the kitten that good things happen when you are around it will more likely warm up to you. Also be very slow and quiet around it at first....it maybe scared! Good luck!
