Question:

Is it normal for my puppy to be lethargic three days after being spayed?

My 5.5 lb.Maltese pup was spayed 3 days ago. She's been picking at her sutures, so I put the e-collar on her and took her to the vet today. They said she wasn't infected, but that we needed to keep the collar on and keep her calm. She's still very lethargic. No fever and she's eating and drinking. Could this be a hormonal problem due to the surgery or could it be something worse?

  1. Just keep an eye on her. It's scary I know. It's not like they can tell you what;s wrong.

Just keep doing what your doing and if you have any dought call the vet again...

After my cat was fixed she hid for 4 days. She's fine now!

  2. I would be too!

My dog had an aural hematoma and when she had the surgery we had to keep her ear up and the cone on her to keep her from scratching. She was miserable for the full two weeks it was on.

Your dog probably just doesn't feel well after having surgery like that. Just keep the collar on her until she's 100% better, she shouldn't have had the chance to get at the sutures to begin with.

  3. Most puppies bounce back a little quicker than that.  But if you took her to the vet and she checked out okay, I wouldn't worry too much.  Just monitor the incision site.  Is she on any painkillers?  Sometimes they need them.  Maybe she's just having some discomfort.

  4. While there could be many reasons why your puppy is lethargic, the most likely reason is that your puppy is still experiencing side effects from the anesthesia. When I got my dog, she was lethargic for about a week. The fact that your dog is eating and drinking is an excellent sign. I would say that you have nothing to worry about. However, if your dog is still lethargic after about a week I would take her to the vet.

  5. If the vet checked her and said everything was ok ..then its probably because she is sore and doesnt feel like running around and playing .
