There are 3 boys in my class who are obsessed with one of their classmates. They have actually gotten into physical altercations with each other over who will get to sit next to him or play with him. He is annoyed by their behavior and so we have had to separate them all. Is it normal for boys to fixate on each other? I have been teaching for about 5 years (preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, and a 3-5 cluster) and I haven't seen this type of behavior before.

  1. I have seen this before. They will get over it. But I explained to the kids that it behavior is not going to get what you want. We need to SHARE. Sharing and compromise need to be learned. This time boy1 sits w/ him next boy2 sits w/ him....

  2. I don't think this behavior is normal. If I were you I would talk to thier parents.

  3. I see this quite regularly...children have their friends and see them as THEIR best friend...its part of the egocentric phase they pass through as the develop social and emotional skills.

Often a set of visual rules helps such as "if someone is sat on the chair, you wait till they are finished"...because its visual you can take children over to them to remind them :)

  4. Yes my son is in prek and he is the outspoken one that the teacher hates, but all the kids love him.  So I would say yes that's normal

  5. My son did this at that age but he is HFA (high functioning autistic)
