Is it normal that my 11 month old daughter doesn't call us by our names?

Like she can say mama and dada, but i don't think she has connected it with our faces yet. For instance, she doesn't say "dada" when i walk in the room" or call "mama" when she's crying or needs me. Is this normal?

  1. very normal

  2. At only 11 months old, your daughter is actually on the young side of being able to consistantly connect a specific sound with a specific thing.  She may be able to turn her head and look at you if someone says, "Where's mommy?", but she won't necessarily be able to look at you and say mama for quite a few more months.  Language development is a gradual process and comes with quite a bit of experimentation and practice along the way.  The most normal age for the take-off of language development is in the 12-24 month age range.  You will find some babies with an impressive use of language before 12 months and you will find some who have reached their 2nd birthday with still no real discernible words.  Both can be completely normal for that particular child.  Crying for mama when distraught or crying dada when dad enters the room would be much more common in a 2 year old than a 1 year old.

  3. My son says mama and dada but he doesn't associate the words with the people.  At his 9month well check, his pediatrician said that he is still babbling which is perfectly normal at this stage and within a few months he will start to be more specific with his "words".  So at 11 months, it sounds like you are still in the normal timeframe.
