I'm afraid of my in mother in law. I don't know why. She isn't nasty, doesn't look scary, I don't want to say anything stupid or offend her in anyway. I respect her so much.

I'm not married yet, but I will marry my gf, that is if she ever says yes. Well point is, I get on well with everyone else but I'm afraid of my gf's mum.

Is it normal to fear in laws, or in laws to be?

  1. I'm the same way as you. I'm not married yet, but I respect my boyfriends mom so much that I usually keep quiet around her. All the time. She probably thinks I'm a mute.

I'm not really "afraid" of her. But I want her to like me and not talk to my boyfriend about me behind my back or anything. Or say anything bad about me. They're very close, and I know if she doesn't like me, my boyfriend might look differently at me.

I'm a nice girl and I really shouldn't have any reason to act like this around her. She likes me, his whole family likes me. But yeah, I know what you mean. I think it's quite common.

  2. Never be afraid but never feel the comfort of thinking you can say what ever you want and all will be well, don't ever treat her daughter bad and never let anyone but your own mother down that is the only time that you can but your mother in law in her place if she tries to but anyone of your family down. Don't ever put any of her family down and the love and respect will grow.

  3. Nothing to be afraid of.

But it reminds me of something I saw in MAD magazine once. Here it is:

There are two thing to worry about:

Either you are well or you are sick.

If you are well there is nothing to worry about.

If you are sick there are two things to worry about.

Either you will get well or you will die.

If you get well there is nothing to worry about.

If you die theres only two things to worry about.

Either you will go to heaven or to h**l.

If you go to heaven there is nothing to worry about.

But if you go to h**l you will be so darn busy shaking hands with your friends you wont have time to worry.

  4. yes mine are terrifying, but remember you want to marry her not her folks.Oh, and my best advice, draw up boundaries from the beginning.
