Had a bottom left wisdom tooth extracted one moth ago. I had stitches, but there is still a hole. The hole is pretty deep, and it is white on bottom (looks like bone). Has not bothered me until today. My jaw is throbbing and the dentist is closed till Monday. Anyone know if this is normal?

  1. its possible that things are ok. the main concern is if it is bleeding.  but definetly go to the dentist with that concern

  2. are you sure you had stitches?  I thought I did until I realized I hadn't.  It's possible that you've got food or something trapped in there that's causing an infection that you need to irrigate.  Get a syringe from a drug store (the type that's used to dispense medicine) and fill that with water and shoot it into the hole.  Or go to your dentist for one.  They should've give you one to begin with actually.

But if you're really concerned, please call your dentist.  No need messing around with infection so close to your brain.

  3. yes, the hole in your jaw will take a while to fill again.

Be careful what you eat, as some things are not easy to get out.  I ate peanuts shortly afterwards... and it got stuck in that hole.  (Dentist removed it after a few hours of being there.

  4. No, this does not seem normal after one month of healing.  I am also concerned about the "white appearance".  The throbbing pain is usually a sign and symptom of an acute infection.  I would definately have this checked out by another dentist or even in an emergency room.  Most likely they will place you on some antibiotics, but I would not let this slide.  If this is indeed an infection, it is better to take care of it immediately.

  5. No

Go to the doctor or another dentist.

    Sound's like an infection

  6. More than likely you have whats called a dry socket. The clot that was in the hole has fallen out due to rinsing your mouth or something. What you are seeing probably is the bone. This exposed area is very painful. Go back to your dentist and he will pack it full of some strips. Call his number he should have an after hours number or answering service.

  7. It's not normal but I had that happen about a week after. Mine was what they called a "dry socket". It's like the clot came out. That's why they say don't smoke or suck on straws. For me I went in about daily and they filled it with some type of wax which kept the air off of it until it healed. That was some time ago so maybe a different treatment now. Try to call a dentist that treats afterhours. I don't know if it is considered emergency. If I was hurting it would be an emergency. Good luck.

  8. I had a similar problem but had al 4 pulled back in November and only one was slightly irritated, the root was a little longer than the others and took a little longer to heal - rinse your mouth out with warm/hot salt water, even a little peroxide will help, and take some ibuprofen/advil/tylenol or whatever every 4 hours.  You may have gotten food stuck in it for it to act up like this. It'll get better.
