Is it normal to have fruit flies in my compost?

I have an Earth Machine which I just started using in the spring. When I open the top there are generally a lot of fruit flies around. But it doesn't smell at all.

yes they are attracted to the pheramones i think, we cant smell it but they can

for instance how bees find there way back to the hive
