Is it normal to use your middle name sometimes?

Question

I was just wondering how common it is for people to use their middle name sometimes if they're just bored of their first name. This includes writing your name on stuff that doesn't require your full legal name (tax papers, etc.). Speaking of which, what kind of stuff is appropriate to use your middle name as your first name?

It would likely lead to confusing situations. My middle name is Kathryn and I've tried to go by Katie just for some variety, but it's hard to make yourself respond to a somewhat alien name. I have several cousins who've gone by their middle names their entire lives. My cousin Mitch's whole name is Jeffrey Mitchell though we've never called him Jeff. A teacher at his school though refused to follow this, calling him Jeffrey in class. In a way, it was slightly insulting of the man.

A name is what you pick, you have to be steady though, don't toss out another name to one person and another to someone else. If you want to go by your middle name that's cool, but don't waver or people will think you're lying. Plus it's hard to form a complete identity if you don't fully recognize one name.

Of course it's normal to use your middle name sometimes if you are bored with your first name. I have a grandparent who doesn't like her first name, so she uses her middle name. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

I've known a few people who use there middle name as their given name.  Most commonly, it seems, because they were named after a relative and it saved on confusion.

Both my dad and my little brother go by their middle names.

Yes, it's normal.  My friend named her son after his father but, so not to confuse the two they call their son by his middle name.

my little sister's name is alexandra but everyone calls her kayla which is her middle name n thats what she is known by at school

I know a few people who do...I worked with a guy and his real name was Michael Chad but he always went by Chad. I don't know why though. I also know someone who's real name is Mary Kelly but goes by Kelly.  I think if you really like your middle name better, it is appropriate to use it at work, with friends, signing it on things unless it specifically states to use your first name.

My mom started using her middle name after highschool and still does and I know a few others that just prefer the middle name.  My son doesn't like his first name and he is only 3 1/2 years old so he goes by his middle name.
