At present, my focal point fire uses 3 x 60 watt fireglow bulbs, and I wish to reduce my energy consumption and also the cost. Any advice would be appreciated.

  1. They still get hot, 40 C to 50 C, so you'd have to check the thermal properties of the paint, but yeah I don't see why not.

  2. Yes, you should be able to safely coat CFL's with a translucent red, similar to the "candy apple red" coatings they put over metalflake bases in the auto painting biz.

You might also investigate using red lighting gels - s/b available from video and photo supply outfits.    They're capable of withstanding incandescent heat, and it's flexible enough to wrap around a CFL.   About the only concern would be if you used something to fasten it (like tape, or glue) that wasn't able to withstand much heat, but since (I think) you're referring to fluorescent bulbs, heat shouldn't be much of an issue.

  3. Why not just set light to the furniture?

  4. I was wondering, can you actually buy tinted low energy bulbs?  If not, then why not?

My mother has some soft pink 40 watt incandescent bulbs in the toilet she'd like to replace.
