Is it odd to mourn a relationship for longer than the length of the actual relationship?

for example if it lasted 2 months and 3 months later it still feels as if it ended yesterday. And you're still in 'breakup mode' (random outburts of crying, cant sleep cant even think about dating others, cant even THINK straight period etc)

  1. It's not odd.  Grieving takes as long as it takes.  Sometimes, other issues are at play - usually coming from the past occurrences:  like a death in the family, death of a pet, loss of a prior relationship.  Then the actual present relationship is also loaded with carry overs from the past that you still need to grieve.  Don't be too hard on yourself.

  2. Okay, I am going to have to give some clue to my age, which I have been avoiding, but when I was sixteen I dated a guy for three months.  I saw him literally every day and I was crazy about him.  He dumped me for a fourteen year old girl who would have s*x with him.  I went through the same feelings you did for a long time, and I have to admit that it is now 35 YEARS later and I still have dreams about this guy from time to time.  I don't cry over him or anything that drastic but I have never been able to get him out of my mind completely.  I mentioned this to a doctor recently and she thought it was interesting that I still thought (and dreamed) about him but she didn't seem to think it was abnormal.  Everyone grieves differently and there are no set rules or time limits.  Gradually you start to think of them less and less and eventually you will realize that you have gotten over them.

  3. I think that it depends on how intense that relationship was and what was going on at the time.  However, it is about time that you started thinking about moving on with someone else and began going out with friends more.

  4. You are grieving for something you lost. It isn't odd if the grief lasts longer than the relationship. These things take time, and it varies from person to person.

    You're perfectly normal.
