  1. Lene,

For a long time, the schools encouraged a "faster is better" approach. As you know, it is entirely expected that Israeli kids enter first grade as readers. (The pressure on 4 and 5 year olds to read in kindergarten rivals the Japanese drive to excel.)

However, educators discovered that today's children must be exposed to vowels over an extended period. If not, their writing and reading skills often suffer later on. So, a more successful pedagogic methodology --introduced into some Israeli schools about 5 or 6 years ago-- again advocates the continued use of vowels for a longer period.

If a 6 or 7 year old good reader insists that s/he wants to read more books without vowels, I would allow it as long as the child continues reading some books WITH vowels.

  2. Yes, it is.

  3. of course it ok, its great, very clever kid....

but you must still make sure that the kid knows how to read with the "points" as well

  4. yes, it is

  5. no he should be shot for doing such a horrible thing

  6. It took me till i was 7 or 8 years old to read without vowels. It really depends on the person so see the childs learning level

  7. Fora Jewish boy to read his haftorah (it is a piece of the Bible that the Rabbi allows him to read on the day that he gets Bar Mitzvahad) by using a pointer this way he will do it very easy.

  8. Yes; it okay for a six-year-old to read Hebrew without the vowels if she or he is capable.  Most children rely on them until about third grade.

  9. yeah

  10. yeah if they really understand it. i kind of understand how to read hebrew without vowels, but it really helps me with the vowels! but then again i'm not israeli and i go to public school.

  11. yeah its okay but you should should have him/her read with them also because there are some Hebrew words that are spelled exactly the same but have different "points" so he/she should be used to reading with them and if he/she can read without also that's great
