I just bought some Whiskas Purrfectly Fish for my cats to try. One of those variety packs is the Mackerel & Sardine, which has big chunks of Sardine in it. The chunks are so big that they included fish bones, mostly short bits of bones, but there are a few regular-sized bones, too. So I picked out all the bones, one by one, before feeding that specific pack to my cats.
Is it OK for cats to eat small pieces of fish bones? I'm concerned because, as a kid, I witnessed a neighbor's cat choked on large pieces of fish bones and got the mouth all bloody. In poor villages of Asia, fish bones are all people would ever feed to cats and meats are always saved for humans. It was one of the most horrific sights I've ever seen in my life. But I never expected to see fish bones in cat food here in the U.S.
