Question:

Is it ok for me to ask my flatmate's boyfriend to share the electricity bill?

My flatmate's boyfriend is staying at our flat everyday. In fact he lives here. I don't dislike him, he's a very nice person although I did feel a bit annoyed from time to time...However when it comes to money I feel that I should stand on my rights as a bill paying tenant. Is it too harsh if I ask my flatmate - not when her boyfriend is around because I don't want to make him feel like he shouldn't be here - to suggest that he would pay portion on the electricity bill? I pay half of the tv licence because it's not much but I feel it's a bit unfair if I pay the half of the electricity bill when he's clearly living here...how should I talk to her so that she doesn't get upset?

  1. Yep, you need to sit down with both of them and go over how you feel. Don't be confrontational.  Just state your case as you did here.  He is clearly using utilities that otherwise wouldn't be used.

The bills and rent even should be shared three ways from this point on.  You are being very reasonable in your request that he just help with the electric bill.

If he can't handle it, then he needs to leave.
