  1. It is okay.  Unfortunately it'll be the pet owners that lose.  This is why it is important for pet owners to be active in boards and home owners associations.  If you don't speak up and fight against this stuff, you will end up on the short end of the stick.

  2. Are you talking about a county in NY State or are you talking about a private community/gated community?

    If you mean in a private community, condominium, co-op, it is up to the board of directors in charge, who was voted in by that private community that makes rules pertaining to pets.

    If you mean a county of New York State, that county is not allowed by NYS law to enact breed specific legislation.  They can however, enact dog limits...how many dogs/cats can live in an apartment or certain amount of property.

    If you feel a potential law is unfare, you need to get all the information you can about it, contact the sponser of the bill and your representatives in order to voice your opposition of a bill.  It is a good idea to get on a yahoo list regarding NYS dog law and let those in your community know about laws that may affect them.

  3. You mean like a home owners association? Yes they can set up limits as far as breeds and weight

  4. yes, a community can do that.

    i know it seems unfair. );

    good luck.

  5. Yes if you mean what I think you mean they can. I live in a condo. The rules say no dogs over 35lbs. They are pretty lenient on it, but they won't allow large dogs as our yards are pretty small.

    If it's a new rule it should be grandfathered.

  6. I think so alot of apartments won't alow pits same as alot of rentals.

  7. Yes they can set up rules like that but it should also be grandfathered in for the dogs that are there.  You should not have to get rid of a dog that you have had as a pet.  You should be allowed to keep that dog but not replace it with another like it.

  8. Yeah, there's limits for certain size and somtimes breeds!

  9. Yep they sure can. Where I live we are only allowed one dog in our community, no taller than 18 inches at the shoulders (some exceptions) no dog breeds that were/ are used for guarding (like German shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pit Bulls etc). Every dog has to be registered with the office for approval....its unfair to those with great dogs. But I understand that there are alot of irresponsible dog owners out there (especially where I live), so rules like this have to be in place to keep others safe.

    As long as they own the land, they can make as many rules as they want within reason.
