When are you supposed to plug up your refrigerator after you get it? I have a compact refrigerator for my dorm room

  1. have you had it sitting in the operating position for a couple of hours? Yes? plug it in!


  2. The reason you have to leave it a while in the operating position is that at the bottom of the compressor is a sump with special oil in it. This is so the piston which compresses the refrigerant and pumps it round needs to be lubricated as it is a sealed system and there is no easy way to get more oil in. The danger is that if you plug it in directly it arrives then the oil could have drained away into another part of the system and the compressor would run dry and damage it. An hour or two should be sufficient.

    You say yours is a compact model-this should require less time than a large one so a couple of hours should be all right or if you have it refer to the manufacturers instructions. They don't always tell you about this though.
