Is it ok to accept a cash gift from a friend to pay bills?

a friend of mine offered to help me with 2000$ to pay my bills because I just started a new job and I will not be paid for a while and the bills will lapse if not paid. He said that it is a gift and agreed to put that in writing and he said ok he would. He said just when ever you have extra cash go out and find someone who needs help and do the same for them someday. He said no strings attached.
